What do the Student Success Leadership Institute, Guided Pathways, VIP-PASS, Student Success Action Plans, and Complete 2021 have to do with one another?

What do the Student Success Leadership Institute, Guided Pathways, VIP-PASS, Student Success Action Plans, and Complete 2021 have to do with one another? The answer is, everything! These terms are a continuum of one driving goal across the VCCS, to increase student success. To better understand how it all fits together requires a little reordering.

Think of it this way.

complete2021_smallgraphic

At the center of all that we are doing is Complete 2021, our strategic goal. This goal is essentially focused on tripling earned credentials for the economic vitality of the Commonwealth. It’s a goal that recognizes that the value of a well-educated and highly skilled workforce is greater than the institution. When our friends, family, and neighbors thrive, the economic impact drives our institutions, improves our education system, and enhances the quality of life in our communities. Reaching this goal requires more than the development of small-scale initiatives that only impact a limited numbers of students. It requires that we evaluate institutional and systemic barriers that impede student success, and give every student a clear pathway to a workforce credential, certificate, or degree based on their career goals.

Complete 2021 Agenda –

A Six Year Strategic Plan for Virginia’s Community Colleges

Virginia’s community colleges serve an estimated 400,000 people across the state. The opportunities we provide include some of the most cutting-edge and highly-demanded training and education available.

But, simply accessing those opportunities is no longer enough. You have to earn a credential to make it count toward a career.

Over the next ten years, Virginia will need to fill 1.5 million jobs. The majority of these jobs will require a postsecondary credential – an associate’s degree and the certifications and licensures that are our bread-and-butter.

To accommodate the demand for these middle-skill-level jobs (more than a high school degree but less than a bachelor’s), Virginia’s Community Colleges are embarking on a new six-year strategic plan to triple the number of credentials that our students earn by the year 2021.

Tripling the number of credentials that our students earn is the single goal in this strategic plan.  The Chancellor’s objectives for the 2016-2017 biennium for achieving this goal fall into the five broad categories below.

Featured College: Wytheville CC

In the Fall of 2016, Wytheville Community College launched a new tool designed to help students better understand academic pathways, career options, and labor market information. A visit to their website will lead you to a simple tab, labeled “Pathways.” While the design is quite impressive, what’s even more impressive is the pace at which the college community got behind this project, a necessary step towards their greater Guided Pathways work.

By simplifying information, helping students start with the career end in mind, mapping programs for the best outcomes, and grouping programs by career opportunities, WCC is helping students make clear academic and career decisions.
